No, it’s not a tailgate party. It’s the Classic Car Show at Sir Pizza West Kendall. Held the first Saturday of every month from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm in the parking lot, this event attracts hundreds of people from owners to gawkers. In fact, the event has gotten so big that the restaurant has added a show on the 3rd Saturday of the month for 1990 and newer models. Sir Pizza Hialeah has also gotten in on the act, with its own Classic Car Show on the 2nd Saturday from 7:00pm – 11:00pm.

So what is it about classic cars that hold so much appeal in this age of flash and bling?

“These cars really have a lot of personality,” says Jose Antonio, one of the show’s participants. Jose came with his 1941 Chrysler, which he bought in Pennsylvania 15 years ago. “Each car has such a distinct look. You can really distinguish between the models and the years.”

Jose’s Chrysler has the original interior and he rents the car out for weddings, video/commercial shoots, special occasion and more. Mostly, he comes for the people.

“I like to meet everyone,” Jose says. “I’m here to show off my car and answer questions.”

For some, Classic Car Shows are real family affairs. Steve and Mary DuBruce came with their 1923 Ford Model T. The couple bought the car several years ago and spent years rebuilding it.

“We always wanted a Model T,” Steve says. “And we love coming just to see all the cars. No two are ever alike.”

“We have to be careful when we drive it, though,” his wife Mary adds. “Everyone wants to turn and look at us on the road so we can become a hazard,” she says, with a laugh.

For real family togetherness, you can’t beat Ann and Jerry Montero. They own His & Hers classic cars. “His” is a metallic blue ‘57 Chevrolet; “Hers” is a red ‘71 Camaro. They’ve been married for 31 years and doing the classic car circuit for 30.

“We wanted something that we could do together and classic cars became our hobby,” Ann says. “It’s something we can share. We’ve owned all kinds of cars over the years.”

Both the Chevy and the Camaro had to be full restored, which is something the couple has done before. “We enjoy putting them back together,” Ann says. “Plus, we have two boys so we’d have them help, too. It was a good way to keep track of them, and gave us something to do together as a whole family.”

“That’s what’s so special about coming to these car shows,” Ann continues. “They’re very family-oriented events. We’ve really met some great people. I look forward to coming. I especially love this show at Sir Pizza because I’ve become addicted to the food.”

The Sir Pizza Cup Challenge featured some of the best women collegiate golfers in the country. Hosted by the University of Louisville, the tournament – which took place February 27th and 28th at the Weston Hills Golf Course in Weston, Florida – included 14 NCAA Division I teams who were not only competing for the top prize, but a spot in the NCAA Post Season Tournament. The ladies of NC State claimed the title, while teammates Brittany Marchand and Augusta James claimed first and second place respectively. Texas State University placed second and the University of Miami came in third.

NC State capped a dominating tournament performance, ending with a 22-shot victory over their nearest opponent thanks to four members of the team placing among the Top 4 in the tournament. The team finished 6-under with a total of 858 over three rounds, setting a new school record.  Teammates Brittany Marchand (sophomore) and Augusta James (freshman) ended up competing in a playoff to determine the winner.  Augusta James had been leading throughout the tournament, but Brittany Marchand was able to come back from three shots back entering the final round to take the title, ending at 3-under and 69 for the day.

After the tournament, Sir Pizza fed 120 people, including players, coaches and rules officials. After lunch, an Awards Ceremony was held to congratulate the top finishers. The top two teams and individual winners were presented with etched glass Sir Pizza Cups. Individual winner Brittany Marchand spoke, thanking the host University of Louisville and Coach Kelly Rothberg for putting the tournament together.

On hand to help present the trophies was Sir Pizza of South Florida CEO, Rene Prats. “This was a great tournament and I congratulate all the athletes for what they’ve accomplished,” he remarked. “We at Sir Pizza are honored to be a part of NCAA women’s golf.”
